Creating Beautiful, Timeless Images
But What Do I Wear??
The most important thing you can wear is something that feels like you.
Your family photos are about connection, laughter and genuine moments—not perfectly matching outfits. When everyone feels comfortable and confident, it shows in every image.
Choose a Colour Palette
Rather than dressing everyone in identical colours, choose a palette of complementary tones. I've scattered a bunch of palettes below, but don't feel you have to stick to them rigidly. Experiment with adding accent colours from various palettes to the base colours you decided on.
Generally speaking, try to stick to 2-3 colours per family unit with 1 or 2 accent colours.
For extended family shoots you can choose 3 or 4 base colours with 2-3 complimenting accents that give the larger group photos some texture.

Colours that photograph beautifully;
Cream | Beige | White | Soft browns | Greys | Olive | Sage | Rust | Terracotta | Dusty blue | Soft blush | Denim
These natural tones photograph beautifully in parks, forests, beaches and open fields while keeping
the attention on your family.

Try to avoid:
Bright neon colours | Large logos | Busy graphics | Loud patterns | Fluorescent colours, as these can reflect colour onto skin in bright sunlight.
Coordinate—Don't Match
Think of your family's outfits as one collection rather than individual outfits.

A simple way to plan is:
- Choose two or three main colours max.
- Mix different shades and textures.
- Add a couple of accent colours.
- Keep everyone's style similar in formality.
The result should feel natural, timeless and effortless.
Add Layers & Texture
Layers create variety without changing outfits.

Consider adding:
Cardigans | Jackets | Linen shirts | Knitwear | Scarves |
Hats | Simple jewellery | Watches

Different fabrics such as linen, cotton and knits add depth to your photographs. Simple patterns are ok, but try not to have too many people in patterns
Dress for the Location
Beach Sessions
Flowing dresses, linen shirts, rolled sleeves and bare feet create a relaxed coastal feel.
Bring: Towels | A change of clothes | Spare outfits for children |
Extra clothing for adults too - you may end up in the water!

Forests & Parks
Layers, boots, knitwear and earthy colours work beautifully against greenery.

Open Fields
Soft fabrics that move in the breeze photograph beautifully and add life to your images.
Wear Something You Can
Move In
Your session won't be about standing still and smiling.
We'll be walking, cuddling, playing, laughing and exploring together, so wear clothing that lets you move comfortably.

Choose outfits that:
Feel comfortable | Fit well | Allow movement | Stay in place without constant adjusting
Hair, Makeup & Finishing Touches
Whether you prefer a natural look or something more polished, choose whatever helps you feel your best.

A few little details make a difference:
Clean nails | Moisturised hands | Neat hair | Lip balm | Hair ties for windy weather | Baby wipes for little faces and hands
Tips for Families with Young Children
Relax—the best moments happen naturally.
Children don't need to sit perfectly still. Playing, cuddling and exploring often create the most
genuine photographs.

Bring along: Favourite snacks | Water | A comfort toy if needed | Wipes | Spare clothes |
Extra nappies if required

If travelling in your outfits, consider bringing a backup set in case of spills.
Think About Your Home
If you're planning to display your photographs, consider the colours in your home when choosing clothing.
A coordinated wardrobe often creates artwork that feels timeless and fits beautifully into your living spaces.

Most of All…
Don't stress about creating perfection. The real magic comes from your connection with each other.

Laugh together.
Play together.
Cuddle close.

Those are the moments you'll treasure for years to come.
I can't wait to capture your family's story!
